Whether you’re a laboratory professional, nurse, physician, or educator, our platform supports your teaching, learning, and continuing education with reliable content.
Let’s Learn Blood Bank was founded by Wyenona Hicks, co-author of the leading textbook Modern Blood Banking & Transfusion Practices and an educator with more than 18 years of teaching experience. She has delivered national and international presentations and trained thousands of professionals and students in transfusion-related disciplines.
Her vision: to close the education gap in blood banking with accessible, expert-led instruction.
I grew up on a farm in rural Kentucky, where I learned the values of hard work, perseverance, and compassion. A formative lab experience in college sparked my lifelong passion for blood banking and transfusion medicine.
Over the years, I’ve worked as a medical technologist, earned advanced degrees and certifications, contributed to research, and co-authored educational resources. Inspired by a family of educators and driven by a love for teaching, I founded Let’s Learn Blood Bank to support and empower students, educators, and lab professionals through engaging, flexible learning.
As a cancer survivor, I’m especially grateful for the chance to give back and help grow the next generation of laboratory professionals.
A Californian at heart, now rooted in Minnesota, I’ve spent over 20 years in the clinical lab world. The true turning point in my career came during my year in the Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) program at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). An experience sparked a deeper love for blood banking and took my knowledge to a whole new level.
For the past five years, I’ve worked in education within the IRLs at the American Red Cross (ARC), supporting both the SBB and Blood Bank Technology (BBT) programs. I enjoy introducing science majors to the fascinating world of clinical blood banking, and helping experienced pros rediscover the details they may have missed, the ones that explain the “why” behind what they’ve been doing for years. It’s time to rethink how we teach! I truly believe learning should be enjoyable, relevant, and and designed to meet you where you are, both in your life and your career.
If you asked Paula to describe herself, she'd happily say, “I am a scientist, an educator, and
an energized senior.” Her enthusiasm for teaching is evident in all her actions.
She brings experience from a diverse blend of positions in academia, industry, publishing, and more.
At Let’s Learn Blood Bank, she will channel her educational expertise and serve as an author, reviewer, and editor.
